Ambon, Indonesia
Indonesia has the world’s second-biggest share in mismanaged plastic waste. 80% of ocean plastic pollution comes from land sources, due to inadequately disposed waste. This includes disposal in dumps or open, uncontrolled landfills. The waste enters the ocean via rivers, wastewater outflows or wind. In 2017, we started our first project, to install passive Litter Traps at river mouths and other highly polluted waters. Together with local organizations, we made three Litter Traps from low budget, re-used local materials.
